Monday 9th May

I moved on from the Trossachs although only as far as Doune, not far from Stirling and Dunblane.  Friends of John and Mary had recommended the Red Kite feeding place in Argaty and Doune Castle.

The Red Kite place was really good despite the fact that winter is the time to see lots of them together; now they are nesting and are spread out.  There were two hanging around for a long time before the feeding time, a heron and lots of crows.  The meat, on the bone, was left in a pile.  The heron just gorged, ignoring everything else.

The crows picked at the pile and carried selected items off in their beaks.  The red kite attacked the crows and inevitably the crows dropped the food, the kite swooping to pick it up in the air – the kite didn’t need to go to the pile of food.

So that’s the Red Kites.  Next Doune Castle – an relatively innocent and unassuming castle (in castle classification) until chosen by Monty Python to be used for the filming of Monty Python and the Holy Grail – French taunting, Trojan Rabbit and interior scenes. Terry Jones does the Audio guide with extras not about the history of the castle but about the filming – all the punters, well those Brits of a certain age group, are wandering around the castle grinning.
