22 July; Friday Applecross to Uig on Skye

I decided to go back to Skye having been forcibly removed by the breakdown truck!

001 Raasay from Applecross bay

002

Applecross village – the camp site is above the village

003 Raasay from Sand

004 The Cuillin & south Raasay

005 Trotternish & north Raasay

006

Highest point of Raasay – apparently the most recent volcano

I drove from Applecross along the coast, not over the top, going for lower stress levels rather than good views from the top.  The MoD Torpedo station is quite discreet (checked the spelling!).  They also have a base on the island of Rona, north of Raasay and there is a base at Kyle which I had a good view of while staying at the garage in Kyle.

008 The Inverness train

Attadale Gardens came stongly recommended and it didn’t  disappoint.

The one at the back is the way over the top to Applecross, from Attadale Gardens

There is no ferry from Strom Ferry

I stopped off to see Eilean Donan Castle.  Very impressive from the outside – used in lots of films; Highlander, Entrapment, The World is not enough.  But, as I was warned, don’t bother about the inside.  It was a ruin until the 1930’s and has none of the skill of Lutyens to give it charm like Lindisfarne Castle.

I drove on to Uig – wouldn’t have driven back and forth between Skye and the mainland when there was still a toll on the bridge – the driver of the tow truck said he had had to pay £21 for his truck plus whatever was needed for his tow.  I stayed at the camp site at Uig – the owners of the site and some of the other inmates of the site were particularly unhelpful and unfriendly.
