23 May Part 2 Monday afternoon–Kirkwall

I was crossing to Westray at 4 so I had some time to do some more site seeing to do in Kirkwall.  They value their trees so much, they prop them up:

015

014 Kirkwall Post Office – built in the days when we were proud of post offices

015 Robert Stewart’s Palace in Kirkwall

016  which is close to the Cathedral and to

017 the Bishop’s Palace.

022

The museum in the foreground, which was a grand house and beyond the library and the bay to the north.  Taken from the top of the Bishop’s Palace tower.  Kirkwall is on an isthmus and to the south is Scapa Flow

023 Looking towards Scapa Flow to the south from the Bishop’s Palace tower.

016 This was the roof of a summer house.  It was made of the ballast from a wrecked pirate ship and shells.  It was taken on another day – hence the lovely blue sky.
