I cycled to Hynish, at the west end of Tiree, which I thought, with my love for industrial archaeology, was brilliant.
Skerryvore lighthouse (built by Alan Stevenson) is 11 miles from Tiree. To build it (and to service it) he built a harbour but the only place he could build the harbour was liable to silt up so he built a flushing system to flush the silt out. This was done circa 1844 and is still all there, including the flushing system but am not sure if it still works. There is also all the necessary accommodation including stables, walled gardens, and semaphore/signal station. And the lighthouse was just about visible:
Just to the left behind the ship
Up one of the hills, which also happens to be a broch but the stones have been used to build a boundary wall
Airport more sophisticated than Coll’s
Back at the pier (sans CalMac ferry)
This is an art installation at the pier (aka shelter?)
