I stayed in an odd campsite at Sandyhills – more static caravans than camp site. It has a lovely beach – and red squirrels. I didn’t manage a photo of a live squirrel so you’ll have to make do with a stuffed one from the museum in Dumfries.
The Lake District across the Solway Firth
And into Dumfries
Here I met Mark for lunch and went on to see Suzanne in the evening, so two good catch-ups.
Unexpected highlight of Dumfries was meeting “Kiki” (for all those who read Enid Blyton’s “…of Adventure” stories) being walked up the high street -
And not Kiki:
The Hole in the Wall Inn was frequented by Robert Burns. When travelling in Scotland one needs a check list as to who is associated for where you are visiting. Top rankers are William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots & Robert Burns and maybe Boswell and Johnson (or maybe they are too English?)? Sometimes you get a full hand of the cards and possibly Dumfries is one of those places.
Possibly too late for Robert Burns and all the others but lovely frontage.
Good things to do with boarded up shops
Dumfries has a lovely museum in a camera obscura on the top of the hill. It started life as a windmill and then a club of local chaps got together to create the camera obscura and one (gents only) had to be invited by the clique to visit to view. I arrived in time to see it in action – it seems to me a way to see what one’s neighbours are up to, as sort of early Google earth.
It was one of those museums I could have spent a long time in as there was a real mix of interesting things, but I arrived quite late in the afternoon.
