17 May Ulva

The weather was bad so the boat trip to the Treshnish Isles didn’t run.

I hailed the Ulva Ferry and went walking on that island.

At the top of the hill is a memorial to Francis William Clark who bought Ulva in 1835.  He was and “improver” and commenced brutal clearances.  He built his memorial on the top of an iron age fort.

The population went from 600 to 150 in 5 years.  It is now about 15.

Ulva scores quite well: Walter Scott (Heavens! I forgot to put him on my original score list!) and Boswell&Johnson.  David Livingstone’s ancestors came from Ulva. Macquaire, the “father of Australia” was born on Ulva.  Another person whom I should place on the check list is QEII who visited, on Britannia, in 1950.
