684 Parent calling

If Magellanics reminded me of golf courses, Gentoos reminded me of Lowry paintings when they were walking or running. What happens is the chicks stand around in the colony while the parents go to sea for food. When a parent comes back a number of chicks start chasing it

– hopefully the parent’s chick is the most persistent and eventually gets fed – but there are there chases going on all over the place.  The other thing that happens is that as the chicks get bigger and more confident the colony migrates towards the beach.  This was most noticeable where the Gentoos had set up a new colony on the top of Jason Hill on Carcase Island – they were starting to shift down the hill.  Then the parent stops and starts to regurgitate the food
