The journey to Volunteer Point takes between 2 and 3 hours, half on roads, half crossing “camp”.
The first stop was to see the burnt out Argentinian helicopter
and I was even supplied with photos of it burning
and a land-basedphotograph of a stone-river
Port Louis where the French settled at about the same time as the Brits settled on Saunders Island.
Volunteer Point is THE place to see King Penguins, the biggest Falkland colony is here. I have to admit here that I found King Penguins rather boring – beautiful but boring. My favourite penguins, by a long street, are the Rockhoppers, second favourite the Gentoos – but more of that in the Wildlife – but just a sneak preview…
A Magellanic Penguin’s burrow – the marks are penguin poo.
(Sadly no Rockhoppers at Volunteer Point)
The Shepherd’s cottage where the warden lives and where I stayed.
the store cupboard Sitting room
There were two birds I hadn’t seen anywhere else which I saw here so its fitting that I include them in the Volunteer Point section…
a Peregrine Falcon (in the middle on the rock)
and Barn Owls – more easy to spot
