Having parked the Van up on the headland overlooking the harbour I went over to Westray as a foot passenger, 1.5 hour crossing, and despite my concern, not rough. Jim and Helen met me at the harbour and whisked me off to see some puffins, but they weren’t performing (the puffins, that is) but we did see some Spring Squill:
J & H were renting accommodation on the west coast in the north of the island – the view was grand. The following day the weather was worse – I think this was the day when all the volcanic ash from Iceland was dumped.
We had to find out what was causing the “smoke”. It was very hard walking with the wind so fierce but it was spectacular
It turned out that the “smoke” is caused by streams flowing down to the edge of the cliff and being blown back by the updraft.
We decided to go to the east side of the island hoping it would be less wild. We had a lovely walk along the shore (more eider ducks, but no decent photo – yet), another ruined kirk and a little more rain.
