As it was a Sunday I didn’t expect anything to be open but was delighted to find that the toilets at the harbour were not only open but also had a shower, seven minutes for £1. When I found this out I hadn’t gone on my walk equipped to have a shower but used the facilities the following morning.
While at one level in the Outer Hebrides there are virtually no camp sites and where there are they have few facilities, they have a very good system of having, at harbours and piers, waiting rooms, toilets, several with showers and there are also facilities for chemical toilets and rubbish disposal which, hopefully, makes people behave better. Despite this there seems to be a lot of antagonism towards campervans.
There are a number of new piers, some of them in new places so the facilities are very good.
I had a lovely wild camp on Saturday and Sunday nights on a beautiful sandy beach looking eastwards. I was woken up at 3.30 am by a skylark singing almost directly overhead.
I had a lovely walk around the island.
- taken at 7.45 am on the way to St Kilda
A memorial to the Nova Scotia giant, 1825 – 1863, 7 ft 9 ins –he was born on this site. I think the memorial reflects his height.
Leverburgh from the only trig point on the island
My (and a couple of others’) wild camp
The ferry route is definitely not direct – it is almost 3 sides of a square – obviously to avoid rocks in the middle.
