Hugh Miller was born and lived in Cromarty. His house and birth place are open to the public. He was a stonemason, the local stone is sandstone, so he became a collector of fossils and became a geologist and wrote a great number of books, among them those about the geology of the Scottish coastline – seems to have been a contemporary of Falconer (Forres).
Modern layout of the back garden of Hugh Miller’s house, his birthplace is the thatched cottage.
